2020 H. B. Goodlin Virtual Festival Results & Acknowledgements

Congratulations and a big thank-you to all of the students, teachers, and families who participated in the 2020 H. B. Goodlin Virtual Festival!

Back in March of 2020, the pandemic caused the schools to close down and all performing arts events were cancelled. As a result, the H. B. Goodlin Scholarship Foundation Board wished to hold an online event, to encourage students in San Diego County to continue their music studies and work toward artistic excellence during these difficult times. It was rewarding for us to see a total of 112 student applications received for this event.

Each applicant prepared and recorded their instrumental performances on video for this virtual festival. Now more than ever, it has become an important skill for young students to learn how to present themselves on camera and to create media for submission for various programs or projects. It is our hope that preparing and polishing the audition pieces, filming their own performances, and submitting the online program applications were all valuable learning experiences for the participants.

I would also like to acknowledge the participating studios, who quickly switched to remote lessons during these challenging times and continued to educate these talented music students:

Ning An, Yulia Atoyan, Irina Bendetsky, Ruslan Biryukov, Magdolna Bornemisza, Dana Burnett, Sun Yung Cho, Hernan Constantino, David Garrett, Rodney Girvin, Anna Grigorian, Sharon Halverson, Angelina Hardy, Eleanor Hum, Chaling Huynh, Inessa Litvin, Rinna Livshin, Pamela Martchev, Jane Masur, Alexander Myrolyan, Jared Nepute, Leslie Olson, Alexander Palamidis, Cho Hyun Park, Isabelle Roux, Lea Schmidt-Rogers, Viktor Shekhtman, Seiran Sohn, Xiao-yan Sui, Elaine Tokman, Michael Tseitlin, Lori Vickers, Angela Yun Yin Wu, Ariel Yang, Elena Yarritu, Mei Yin, Dan Yu, TingTing Zhang, Yao Zhao, and Jiasheng Zhou

We were fortunate to have the following distinguished adjudicators for this event. These judges worked long hours to review each video performance, and wrote thoughtful comments on how our students can grow artistically:

Isaac Allen, Neil Birnbaum, Dr. Karen Follingstad, Lynne-Marie Friedrichs, Michael Gerdes, Dr. Kirill Glaidkovsky, Dr. Hye Kyung Lee, Beth Ross-Buckley, Bryan Verhoye, Dr. Rob Watson, and Teri Watson

Finally, I would like to thank the H. B. Goodlin Scholarship Foundation Board President Jaclyn Summers, and the Board Members Sun Yung Cho, Connie Gale, Lee Galloway, Brian Goral, and Hua Wang, for making this event happen. A special thanks goes to Dr. J. Mitzi Kolar for her expertise and wisdom, and Lea Schmidt-Rogers for always being there for us.

Thank you again for your participation in this year’s Goodlin Virtual Festival. The judges’ comments will be emailed to each participant within the next few weeks. We hope to see you again next year.

The 17 competitive teams included 15 duo teams and 2 four-member teams playing selections written for eight-hands. Three recitals were presented in front of packed audiences, and our judges were very impressed with the level of the students’ playing. Thank you to Steve Baker and Joanne Stohs for adjudicating the event, and special thanks to Yuko Maruyama and Carol Ong-Chen for their help running the festival and all studios who participated.
